Question 1 |
What is the minimum recommended travel limit in Arbiter?
100 miles Hint: You are one of Al's heroes, and there is nothing wrong with setting the travel limit higher than the minimum.
I don't know what this means. Hint: Better check out one of the video tutorials.
40 miles | |
5 miles Hint: Not a good idea unless you don't want to receive any assignments.
25 miles Hint: Not a bad choice, but you will miss plenty of opportunities due to the way Arbiter calculates milage. |
Question 1 Explanation:
We have found that setting the travel limit to 40 is the most reasonable value. Setting to a lower value may mean that you don't get assignments at Simplot, especially if you live in West Boise, Meridian or Eagle.
Question 2 |
What day of the week does Al publish most of the assignments for the following week?
Sunday | |
Friday Hint: Some assignments could be published on Friday, but not most.
Thursday Hint: Some assignments could be published on Thursday, but not most.
Monday Hint: Some assignments could be published on Monday, but not most.
Wednesday Hint: Some assignments could be published on Wednesday, but not most. |
Question 2 Explanation:
I routinely publish assignments for the following week around noon on Sunday. Publish means referees are notified about their assignments in Arbiter and by email and/or text message.
Question 3 |
If there is a problem with an assignment, how soon must you notify Al?
Anytime before the assignment. Hint: Are you serious about being a referee in southwest Idaho?
Within 48 hours of the assignment being published. Hint: Close, but notification needs to be done sooner.
By noon on Thursday. Hint: Unless the assignment was published on Wednesday, you are way too late.
Within 24 hours of the assignment being published.
By the next blue moon. Hint: What planet are you from? |
Question 3 Explanation:
Most problems should be brought to Al's attention by noon on Monday which is 24 hours after the assignment was published. This allows Al plenty of time to find another referee to fill the assignment.
Question 4 |
How often are you suppose to read email during the season?
Every 48 hours Hint: Close, but more frequently.
Whenever you get around to it Hint: Are you serious?
Every hour Hint: I wouldn't mind, but I'm not that unreasonable.
Every day | |
Once a week Hint: Not even close. |
Question 4 Explanation:
During the season, I send out an update email almost every day. Therefore, it is important that you check email daily so you don't miss any important announcements.
Question 5 |
How often are you required to check your Arbiter schedule during the season?
Twice a week. Hint: You'll probably loose assignments if you don't check more frequently.
Once a week. Hint: You'll probably loose assignments if you don't check more frequently.
Whenever I get an email from Arbiter. Hint: That's risky behavior. What if the email gets lost or ends up in your spam filter?
I don't get any assignments from you so I never check. Hint: Since you don't check, that's probably the reason you don't get any assignments.
Every day. |
Question 5 Explanation:
Referees should get in the habit of checking their Arbiter schedule every day during the season. Assignments sometimes changes on short notice and the only way you'll know is by checking Arbiter.
Question 6 |
On What day of the week does Al Padley work on assigning the bulk of the following week's games?
Saturday Hint: Some games may be assigned on Saturday, but Saturday is not the primary day.
Sunday Hint: Some games may be assigned on Sunday and games are usually published on Sunday, but Sunday is not the primary day.
Wednesday Hint: Some games may be assigned on Wednesday, but Wednesday is not the primary day.
Friday | |
Monday Hint: Some games may be assigned on Monday, but Monday is not the primary day. |
Question 6 Explanation:
Most of the assigning work is done on Friday and the game assignments are published to referees on Sunday. This is the reason that your calendar has to be up-to-date by Thursday evening. Trying to enter a block on Saturday is too late.
Question 7 |
How soon after a game must you email a USSF Misconduct Report?
48 hours Hint: Sorry, your Misconduct Report is late.
Whenever you feel like it Hint: Are you serious?
24 hours | |
72 hours Hint: Sorry, your Misconduct Report is late.
1 week Hint: Sorry, your Misconduct Report is late. |
Question 7 Explanation:
Filing a Misconduct Report is a multi-step process:
1. Check the appropriate Misconduct checkbox(es) in your Arbiter game report.
2. Include all the details of misconduct in the Comments section of your Arbiter game report.
3. Download (click link in Arbiter) the USSF Misconduct Report in Word format.
4. Complete the report and email as an attachment to Al Padley.

1 week. Hint: I guess you really don't want to be paid for your assignment.
48 hours. | |
24 hours. Hint: This is an acceptable good practice and you should be commended.
Immediately Hint: A good idea, but you actually have a little longer.
Before the end of the season. Hint: You're not getting many assignments, are you? |
Question 10 Explanation:
SWISRA's contracts with the various leagues require that center referees file the game report in Arbiter within 48 hours. If the report is late, the center referee is not paid for the assignment.
